COPY PASTE: EVERYTHING ABOUT THE COLOURS FROM FEMKE MEINES' HOME

When determining the colours for the house of Femke Meines and her boyfriend Justin, two things played a role. Firstly, their tastes differed considerably: Justin wanted everything white, Femke as much colour as possible. Another difficulty was that they already knew the house so well, Femke had grown up there. Then it is difficult to take the distance that is needed to change everything radically. At LAB, the couple found someone in Karin who could guide them with professional advice . 'I did say: it is your house, I am not going to tell you what to do, we are going to discover that together.'

SHOW WHO YOU ARE

'Femke brought a whole bag of accessories, from plates to cushions,' says Karin. 'That was wonderful for me. It gave an idea of the direction she wanted to go. Based on that, I could advise colours that would best show off Femke's beautiful items. It became a cohesive palette with shades that radiate a warm and natural feeling, such as Mushroom no. 287 , Calm Mood no. 155 , Frosted Sand no. 374 and Golden Leaf no. 752. '

DON'T THINK WHITE

'Justin initially advocated Femke to make everything white,' Karin knows. 'That's understandable when you're decorating your first home and still have to discover everything. That he was open to colour became clear when I showed him with examples what colours do for a space. He just had to be able to see how the atmosphere changes with colour, and that white might not be the atmosphere he wanted after all. That's how we ended up with Frosted Sand no. 374 and Amaze no. 53 5 for the living room, both far from white, but calm, neutral and natural.'

MORE IS LESS

Femke: 'I wanted the whole house to be pink, but I understand that Justin thought differently. He thought it was okay for the bedroom. And now that it's finished, Justin even thinks the chosen shade of pink, Bisou Bisou no. 829, looks subdued. It was precisely by giving everything that colour, including the ceilings, that that peace was created.' When painting a room, the principle of more is less applies. Against your intuition, more pink makes the shade less intense. When you give everything the same colour, that colour does not contrast with a white surface next to it. As a result, it disappears more into the background and in this case it sometimes almost seems as if you are looking at a white wall with a pink glow.

COLOR MAZE

In Femke and Justin's house, every room has a different shade. You walk from color to color as you wander through the house. Karin advises: 'If you do that, be very consistent. Don't paint the ceiling in one room in the color of the walls, and leave it white in the next. Preferably choose colors with the same base tone: all pastels, all saturated shades, or as here all grayed nuances. Good to know: high-quality paint brands have different color charts and fans, of which almost all colors combine well with each other.'

THE INFLUENCE OF LIGHT

Karin: 'The incoming daylight has a great influence on the colours in the house. The conservatory with the kitchen is on the side where the sun sets at Femke and Justin's. That means that the light there is very changeable, especially at the end of the day. I chose the shade Golden Leaf no. 752 there, because it creates an enchanting interplay with the setting sun.'
