A LOOK INSIDE ELINE DE RUIG'S HOME: A BEIGE OASIS OF PEACE

As an entertainment expert, Eline de Ruig knows everything about theatre, series and films. To share the latest news and trends from these worlds with the general public, she joins Shownieuws on SBS every week. She also has her own entertainment section in Bert Haandrikman's morning show on Radio 5, she is a regular substitute for the sidekick of this programme and she tips the best series, films and musicals every day via her socials.

With such a busy life in the spotlight, it is nice to have a place where you can completely relax. And that is exactly what Eline and her boyfriend Elwin have made of their home. “The wish was to create an interior that is as peaceful as possible. We really see home as a place of rest.”

WE JUST CREATE CHARACTER OURSELVES

After a long search, they finally found a house in the Hilversum area in the spring of 2023 that they were sure about. Eline says: “We were hoping for a characteristic house, but that is not possible in the current market.” So it became a - in their own words - 'simple terraced house' that they decided to renovate extensively and give character themselves with moldings, ornaments, upholstery and colors.

PEACE, CLEANLINESS AND BALANCE

To create a balanced color palette, the couple called in one of our color consultants via LAB. “We also already had a number of pieces of furniture that we didn’t want to part with,” says Eline. Their biggest wish was to create a whole with old and new items.

During the first consultation with our LAB expert Karin in our concept store, the basis for the palette was quickly determined. “We didn’t want too much color on the walls, but it certainly didn’t have to be a white house either.” The soft, light color Frosted Sand no. 374 turned out to be the perfect choice. “In addition to the hall and living room, we also continued it in the kitchen and bathroom. And the great thing is that it takes on a slightly different shade in each room due to the incidence of light, but still radiates peace.”

LOOK UP! DON'T FORGET YOUR CEILING

Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls was a great tip from Karin, Eline thought, and she would recommend it to everyone. “This was such a good tip from your color expert. You are often inclined to leave the ceiling white, but by painting it the same color as the walls, it creates even more unity.”

GROUNDING IN THE BEDROOM

In contrast to the rest of the house, the bedroom could be a bit darker. “We really want to relax in this space. That’s why we chose the earth tone Mushroom no. 287 here . We actually thought this was such a beautiful color, that we decided to paint the coffee tables we already had with this paint as well.”

On the walls of the toilet, Eline and Elwin have combined Mushroom no. 287 with old pink wall tiles. “I thought that was an exciting combination,” Eline admits. “But that also turned out very nice.”

Whether you like tone-on-tone or a lot of contrast: as long as you make the right color combinations, your interior will remain balanced. Here you can read how Itten's color circle can help you with that .

BALANCED COLORS, BALANCED ATTENTION

When we ask Eline which room received the most attention during the design and furnishing, she has to think for a moment. “To be honest, all the rooms received the same amount of attention. The living room is a place where you spend a lot of time, so partly because of the open kitchen, we spent a lot of time on that.” There is one place that they have paid little attention to so far. “The garden, we really need to tackle that. But that is a worry for later,” Eline laughs.

FUTURE PLANS: PLAYING WITH COLOR

Despite the couple's fondness for beige and sand colours, they want to play around with striking colours in the future. "For example, with colourful cushions. I really like the trend for bright pastel colours, so I expect you'll see that again soon. The TV cabinet is also a piece of furniture to which I want to add more colour. In addition, the interior could use more character, and things from us. I certainly don't rule out that we'll pick up the brush again in the future to add some variation."

SUSTAINABLE CHOICES FROM WALL TO ROOF

In addition to their choice for our sustainable paint label LAB PAINT , Eline and Elwin have seized the opportunity of the renovation to green the house inside and out. “And we have also made very conscious choices. For example, when purchasing our solar panels, we paid attention to where they were produced. You might think that solar panels are sustainable by definition, but if they are made on the other side of the world, there is a chance that this is not the case at all. In addition, we painted a number of pieces of furniture, so we did not have to replace them and it still felt like we had something new.”

ELINE'S ULTIMATE TIP FOR COLOR CHOICES

“A brainstorming session with a specialist,” she says, laughing. “I can really recommend that to everyone. Not only will all your questions about combinations and the influence of colours be answered, you will also become much more confident about your interior.” She also advises taking colour samples with you everywhere. “That way you can be sure that everything fits together nicely.”
