This is how you choose the right color for your interior

It still sometimes goes wrong. Too dark, too little consistency. You will be shocked by the color on your wall! It's very different from what you envisioned. You can't go wrong with these three tips.

1. Take the incidence of light into account

A color looks very different in a north-facing room than a south-facing one. Grazing light, direct light, backlight, lamplight, seasons, the size of the windows: it all influences the appearance of the color tone. One thing is certain: the color will look really different at your home than the color sample in our concept store or in our webshop. And choosing a photo of someone else's interior can also be treacherous. Each room has its own effect on color.

The photo above clearly shows that the different incidence of light ensures that Diamond Dust no. 232 looks a different shade on every wall!
That is why we recommend purchasing a sample jar and making a test surface on your wall. If you prefer not to paint directly on your wall, do it on a large piece of paper and hang it on the wall. Not only see how the color turns out during the day, but also in the evening and with lamplight.

The specific wall on which the color is applied mainly affects visibility and how dark the color appears. If you choose to place the color on the wall in which there are windows, this color will appear significantly darker than expected. If you choose the wall opposite or next to the windows, the light from the windows or doors will illuminate the color and make it stand out much better. This is clearly visible in the photo above. Mushroom no. 287 looks much darker on the wall with the windows than our color samples and than the wall on which the grazing light falls.

2. Go for nuances and don't limit yourself to one wall

Many people only choose one wall if they want to add a splash of color to their interior. As a result, the contrast between the color and the rest of the walls (often white) becomes too great. Therefore, also choose an intermediate color for the other walls. These different color nuances on the different walls also ensure that your interior gets more cohesion.

Forest Green no. 277 has been chosen for this children's room. An intense color that can come across as quite intense. But by additionally painting Softened Green no. 271 , the dark green becomes softer and the whole becomes more cohesive. In the attic room below , Hero's Time no. 138 is very original combined with Laurel no. 242 . Also note the striking surface division and the pipes that were included in the paintwork!

You don't just create cohesion by painting adjacent walls in a slightly lighter shade of colour. You can also include a wall cabinet ( Terra Pink no. 102 ) in your color plan and complement the color on your wall ( Madonna no. 90 ).

Either by combining opposite walls with each other, or by having the same color come back in a different color tone in vistas in the home. In the photo below this has been done very nicely in the hall ( Pink Peach no. 24 ) and the stairwell ( Terra Pink no. 102 ).

3. Include the ceiling in your color plan

The ceiling is the fifth wall in your interior and with a color on your ceiling you can achieve a great effect both optically and spherically.
Do you have a low ceiling and would you like to make the room appear larger? Then choose a lighter color tone than on the walls. Even if this lighter color shade is darker than white, it will appear optically more spacious because it coincides nicely with the walls. In the bedroom below you can see that Merlot Mania no. 123 on the walls and cupboards combines very nicely with the ceiling in Terra Pink no. 102 . Incidentally, we could have placed this photo very well with tip 2. Because the grayish burgundy color is very well softened here by the earthy pink.

Do you have a high ceiling and do you want to create more atmosphere and a sense of security? Then make the ceiling darker than the walls! The children's room below has a very high ceiling. But by painting the ceiling in the green shade Moss no. 41 , the room becomes optically lower. Especially because the wallpaper and the wall with LAB Chalk in the same color (lime paint always dries slightly lighter than wall paint) are a lot lighter.

You can even magnify this effect optically by applying the color of your ceiling to the top strip of your walls. This trick is used in the photo below. The ceiling is painted in the color Brown Wood no. 222 and a piece of wall has also been included. As a result, the space becomes more intimate and the large living room still gives a sense of security. The rest of the wall was given the color Frosted Sand no. 374 .

You will see that if you apply these tips, you will achieve a much better result! If you still find it difficult, we are happy to help you in our concept store or via our support department . If you really want detailed and thorough color advice for your home, request a color advice .
