The Interview: A Glimpse into Joey Jaq's Mind
In a candid interview we discover not only Joey Jaq his inspiring interior style and the well-considered choices he has made, but also the thought process behind it. How does he incorporate colour into his interior? And does Joey Jaq find sustainability important when furnishing his home and choosing paint? Let us take you into the world of Joey Jaq , where his own roots and sources of inspiration come together to create a unique and colorful environment that reflects his personality.
Can you tell us something about the style of your interior and how you came to this choice?
Joey Jaq has a penchant for the old British style and is especially inspired by the ambiance of Soho House. The combination of dark colors, with details such as moldings and mantelpieces that give a royal feeling, resonate with him and he indicates that this style fits well with his feeling of Amsterdam. He describes his style as a " darker vibe ", but because he also has to take into account the light and the seasons in the Netherlands, he has chosen a lighter base with " touches of darkness ". Joey Jaq says: " I also think Amsterdam is such a royal city. But I really like that, just dark colors, a darker vibe. "
He would love to paint his entire interior in a dark shade, he says. " Because I, honestly, would love to have everything Intensive Moss no. 76. That would just be my dream. But I thought, oh, that's too dark. So I think, with touches of darkness you get a little bit of that British feeling. And then a little bit of a lighter base. Which still has that dark feeling like Nude Cashmere no. 312. " Joey Jaq reveals that he is really an autumn and winter person. He wanted to bring that feeling into his home, that seasonal coziness. "Like a kind of warm hug, a cuddle."
Where do you get your inspiration for your interior?
Joey Jaq draws his inspiration from various sources, including Soho House, New York and Free War Buildings. His style is also influenced by his adoptive parents in New York, who live in a building with a lot of details. He says: " I want that British style. But also a kind of desert, cactus green. Everything combined. " Joey Jaq indicates that he finds it important that his Mexican-American roots are reflected in the interior. He therefore selects decorative elements and posters that reflect his personal history, such as the influence of Mexico and the desert landscape that is a reminder of his youth in El Paso, Texas.
How important do you think sustainability is when furnishing your home and choosing paint?
Joey Jaq is conscious of sustainability, but he admits that he doesn’t actively look for it during the decorating process. However, he notices that many of the vintage pieces he buys are subconsciously sustainable, because they are already old and might otherwise be forgotten or thrown away. “ Sustainability, I don’t really think about that. I think the choices I make are subconsciously sustainable, ” says Joey Jaq. Although he doesn’t actively look for sustainability when shopping, he does often use high-end interior items, and he notices that many of these brands do consciously strive for sustainability.
Just like LAB PAINT is not an average paint brand, but a high-quality, sustainable paint label from the Netherlands with a unique colour collection.
All the walls were white when you bought this house. What role does color play in your interior? And how did you make these choices?
Color is extremely important to Joey Jaq. “ Color is everything to me! I need at least five colors in my interior. Life is so boring without color. ” He wants at least five colors in his interior and likes to add playful accents. For him, life is too serious without color. About his choices he says: “ I want warm tones. They say that green is cold, I don’t believe that. I think it’s a very warm color. ” He chooses colors based on the feeling he wants to create, giving the home a warm, inviting atmosphere that suits his personality.
Have you ever made a bad color choice? If so, what color was it and what did you learn from it?
Joey Jaq has experienced that colours can turn out differently than expected, such as with the shade Arabic Desert no. 710 , which he initially had in mind for the stairs, but this colour turned out to be too pink. " I thought, wow, very different. So I thought, no, I'm just not going to do it. And I'm not afraid to change. " This had everything to do with the incidence of light in the room, Arabic Desert no. 710 really comes into its own on the upper floor where he has provided the walls and ceiling with this shade. He is not afraid to make changes and learns from these experiences to test colours in the room first.
Do you have any tips for readers who want to add color to their interior, but don't know where to start?
Joey Jaq advises starting by determining the feeling you want to create in your home. Do you want a warm and inviting atmosphere? Or a fresh, cool look? Choose a color palette based on that feeling and add pops of color to liven things up. Another great tip from Joey Jaq is to experiment with “ color drenching ,” where you don’t just paint one wall a color, but paint the ceiling, walls, and skirting boards all the same color. This can add a bold and unique look to your interior. He also encourages people to not be afraid of change and to follow their heart in their choices.

Create colorful maximalism with these tips
1. Mix and match: Don’t be afraid to make unexpected color combinations. An orange couch with blue and green pillows? Why not? It’s all about what you like and what your personal style is. If you’re hesitant about adding a lot of color, start with an accent wall or colorful accessories. This can help you get used to color in your home without it becoming overwhelming.
2. Get inspired: Find inspiration on platforms like Pinterest , flip through magazines or follow your favorite interior designers on social media . Save images and ideas that speak to you and try to find a recurring theme in color and style. This process will not only spark your creativity but will also help you find a direction that works for you.
3. Choose a color palette: Think beyond one wall and consider how color will work throughout the space. Consider furniture, lighting, and the overall mood you want to create. Once you have an idea of what colors you want to use, choose three to five main colors and build around them. This will give the space consistency and harmony.
4. Don’t forget the ceiling: Many people forget about the ceiling when it comes to color, but a colorful ceiling can add a surprising and unique effect to a room. Don’t be afraid to experiment and play with color. If something doesn’t work, you can always repaint it. Joey Jaq’s adventure with Arabic Desert no. 710 is a perfect example of this.
5. Trust your gut: While it’s nice to get advice and inspiration, ultimately you should go with what feels right for you. Your home should be a reflection of your personality and style. By following these tips, you can create your own colorful maximalist interior that perfectly matches your unique personality. Don’t let doubts hold you back and dare to experiment!
