Color plays an important role in the life of Mandy Woelkens . For example, wearing color is a way for Mandy to express herself, to influence her mood and she uses colors as an extension of her personality. 1. EXPLORE THE EFFECTS OF COLORS

“When putting together a color palette, think about the associations that colors evoke in you,” Mandy gives as a first tip. By asking yourself what associations or feelings you have with a color, you discover what effect a space in that color can have on you. For example, there are bound to be colors that calm you down, while other colors cheer you up.
Mandy: “In the conversation with LAB color expert Barbara, I told her that I wanted to paint the walls of my attic, which serves as a study and guest room, bright yellow and the window frames ice blue. Then she pointed out that I should turn it around, since you want this space to make you calm. And indeed, the cool blue helps me to concentrate and keeps me sharp. Moreover, you also sleep much better in such a quiet room.”

2. PAINT SKIRTING BOARDS, DOORS AND CEILINGS

To create more coherence in your interior, Mandy gives the tip to also paint the skirting boards and ceilings. “It may feel like a big task in advance, but it is absolutely worth it. Especially when you use striking colours like I did, you create much more peace. If you leave your skirting boards and ceilings white, it will really stand out against your colourful walls.” Is applying the same colours to the skirting boards, frames and ceilings too much for you? much ? Then choose a lighter shade from the same color palette , she indicates . “That way it becomes a little more subtle, but you still maintain unity.”

3. MATCH COLORS WITH YOUR PERSONALITY

For Mandy, the colours that suit her character are also the colours she likes. By looking at your personality, you discover which colours you like to have around you. “In my work as a presenter and editor-in-chief, I am quite outspoken. But people who know me outside of that also know that I am very warm and empathetic . I wanted to create this effect in my home. With outspoken colours that simultaneously give you a feeling of warmth and cosiness .” The creamy Masala Chai no. 31 on the ceiling in the living room and the tropical Pastel Paradise no. 210 in the hall are good examples of this. “With an occasional surprising element, like the wallpaper on the ceiling and the orange refrigerator,” Mandy says with a laugh.

4. EXPERIMENT WITH COLOR ON SMALL WALLS OR ELEMENTS

Colours do a lot for your interior and can give rooms a completely different atmosphere. Yet it can feel exciting for many people to use (more) colour in their home. According to Mandy, it is good to step out of your comfort zone every now and then, because that is the only way to discover what colour does for you. “When people think of colour on their walls, they often think that it will be very intense, that it will make spaces small or cause unrest. But as long as the colours are balanced and match, that does not have to be the case at all. When I am in my colourful home, I feel very relaxed because it is so atmospheric.” Do you want to experiment carefully with colour? Then Mandy advises to first paint one element or freestanding wall . “For example, I really wanted to paint the bright pink LAB COLOUR Oh My Gosh no. 779  in my interior, but not in the entire space . The doors and frames in the living room turned out to be the perfect place for that .”

5. HIRE A COLOR EXPERT

“Even though I knew I wanted a colorful interior, it was nice to know for sure that the color palette was balanced. Barbara from LAB helped me make the right combinations and create the desired atmosphere per room. Finally, I think that an expert can show you that you don't have to be afraid of color, but that it is actually an enrichment for your interior. Moreover, you can really turn your house into a home with color.”
