DIY: the self-designed concrete-look compartment cabinet by Marjolein Bouhuijzen
What if you have a unique piece of furniture in mind that you can't find anywhere? Then you just design it yourself! Interior designer Marjolein Bouhuijzen of BOU Living decided to make the cabinet of her dreams and created an extra special piece of furniture by finishing it with LAB Cementum (concrete look) . Also getting started? That's how she handled it.
Marjolein designed the cupboard online at STULPR , which allowed her to determine all sizes and divisions herself. 'In advance I thought carefully about which home accessories and 'treasures' I wanted to place in which section. I wanted a playful division of subjects,' she says. The result is a cabinet that reaches to the ceiling with four doors at the bottom and further open compartments in different sizes. Because Marjolein already knew in advance that she wanted to put two lamps in the cabinet, she also took power points into account in her design.
The cupboard is in her dining room and has become a real showpiece. It blends nicely with the rest of the interior because the wall behind it is painted in the same color. Marjolein chose LAB Wallpaint and LAB Cementum (concrete look) in the shade Mushroom no. 287 , a warm earth tone with a mix of beige, gray and cream. An ideal color for a calm, natural atmosphere that fits in a versatile interior.
The compartment cabinet was delivered as a kit. Because all parts are numbered, the piece of furniture was assembled within an hour. Curious how easy that was? In this reel Marjolein shows the whole process.
Because Marjolein wanted to create a concrete effect, she chose LAB Cementum. For the finish, the untreated MDF planks are prepared with the pink grain primer (this is included with LAB Cementum).
After the primer, Marjolein applied LAB Cementum to the planks and the back wall with a spatula. The result: a unique cabinet with a natural look. Want to get started with LAB Cementum (concrete look)? Read here how to do this.
Marjolein styled the cabinet with coffee table books, vases, lamps and personal items. She chose natural colors that fit well with the atmosphere of the cabinet and a number of elements in darker colors that you also see reflected in the rest of the dining area.
Also a fan of this quiet shade, but are you looking for something different than Mushroom no. 287 ? Then try the new, lighter sister White Truffle no. 644 or the darker Amaze no. 535 .
