AN EXTENSION OF MANDY'S PERSONALITY

When you enter Mandy's home, you are immediately surprised by striking color combinations. "I think color is very important," says Mandy. "It says a lot about who I am, how I feel and what people think about me. In my being, my interior and in my clothing. As a woman of color, color is interwoven in every possible way with who I am."
She bought the authentic dike house in 2020 with her then partner. After an intensive renovation, they moved into the house in the spring of 2021. “It took four months longer than expected. But that also gave us the opportunity to make it our own from top to bottom.”

ORANGE ABOVE

With just one color sample under her arm , Mandy stepped into the LAB CONCEPT STORE. “I had already set my sights on Orange Barista no. 117 and I knew I wanted something pink. I went into the consultation very open-minded.” Together with LAB color expert Barbara, she put together a colorful palette for her home . We complemented Orange Barista with the creamy Masala Chai no. 31. A slightly neutral and lighter orange, which still radiates warmth . Perfect for the ceiling and wall in the kitchen, because colours here appear darker due to the incidence of light .”

The changing incidence of light during the day is one of the reasons why it is wise to test colours first. “ LAB has samples of every color that are painted with real paint . I put them up on the walls all over my house to get used to the idea and see how the colors came out.

AN UNEXPECTED ELEMENT

For the freestanding wall in the living room, they went a step further. “I wanted an extra orange pop of colour on that wall, because you don’t see that very often. And that ’s partly why it’s so cool,” says Mandy. “I like it when something unexpected happens in an interior and deviates completely from the standard. I think that also explains the orange fridge and the wallpaper on the ceiling in the kitchen. The wallpaper hanger asked me three times if I was sure.”

OLD AND NEW IN THE MIX

When furnishing the house, Mandy deliberately chose a combination of new and used items . “ Some of the furniture is new, but there are also some second-hand items that I bought online or via the neighborhood app. It is an old house and I thought it would be nice to keep some characteristic elements. For example, during the renovation we found a piece of stained glass near the container, which had been torn out of the house. We decided to put it back above the door in the new wall in the living room. This window is actually a completely different style, but that makes the house unique.

A TOUCH OF PINK ON EVERY FLOOR

Anyone who takes a quick look at Mandy's interior will have no trouble guessing her favorite color. Fortunately, she can mostly laugh about it herself. " Yes, it's pretty obvious , is n't it? Pink had to be on every floor . It's quite colour blocking with orange, but I like that. ” In the living room it became the window frames, in the kitchen the cabinets and in the hall the stairs. And the bathroom? You guessed it...  In every room there is a shade of pink . If not on the wall, then in furniture or accessories. I just always think pink is a good idea.

MANDY'S TIPS FOR A MORE COLOURFUL INTERIOR

Although a colour palette with pink and orange is not for everyone, Mandy advises everyone to experiment a bit more with colour. “Colour makes a house so much more personal and atmospheric. And it doesn’t even have to be bright colours. You can also enrich your interior with neutral, soft colours.” Would you like more colour, but don’t know where to start? Then paint one wall or add colourful accessories or have someone who knows what they’re doing take a look. “Only by just doing it will you discover what colour does for you. And a colour expert can tell you very well how to best incorporate colour into your interior.” This way you can carefully expand and make your house more and more colourful. “And before you know it, you’ll have a house like this,” says Mandy, laughing.

WORK IN PROGRESS

The renovation may have been finished a long time ago, but her house is certainly not finished yet. “I’m still going to change the bedroom . It’s quite dark now and that doesn’t really suit me . In addition, the garden still needs to be dug up and I might still want to do the front door and the hall. ” When asked what this will look like, we actually already know the answer. “ It certainly won’t be less colorful !”
