5 RENOVATION COLOUR AND STYLING TIPS FROM FEMKE MEINES

The chance that Femke Meines will ever sign up for Help, my husband is a handyman, is zero. By purchasing their house, Femke and Justin discovered unexpected handyman talents in themselves. For Femke, these were, for example, masking and painting. Justin turned out to be able to weld steel doors and much more. Take advantage of the tips from Femke and Justin.

1. WIDEN AND HEIGHTEN THE FRAMES

'It seems like quite a drastic intervention, but we had all the door frames downstairs widened and raised to the ceiling. This house was built in a period when the ceilings were somewhat lower than they are now. The new interior doors with glass gave the interior a huge sense of space and height. We thought it was absolutely worth it.'

2. USE WALLFIX AS A PRIMER

'What I found a real discovery was the primer called wallfix . It is a watery substance in the shade of the final paint. Wallfix ensures that the wall is less absorbent. Because it dries very patchy, you initially think: will this be okay? Well, more than that! It worked perfectly. Even on the newly plastered walls downstairs, the paint covered in one go after applying this stuff.'

    3. GO FOR QUALITY

'When painting, we really noticed that the paint you use makes all the difference. The paint from LAB is a bit more expensive than the house brand from the hardware store, but because it covers so well, we only had to apply one coat. That saved us money, and also time. And if you have to paint a ceiling, you are also very happy that you only have to do it once, I can tell you.' Of course, this depends on the wall (or ceiling), the color and the application.

    4. LED SPOTS IN THE CEILING

'We wanted ceiling spotlights in the living room, but without having to lower the ceiling. Justin solved that nicely with skirting boards along the walls in which he incorporated LED spotlights. The ideal thing is that we can adjust the colour temperature. The beautiful colour of your walls can sometimes look less beautiful in the evening with artificial light. With the adjustable colour temperature of our lighting, we can correct that. And of course we can also dim the light, all simply with the telephone.'

      5. BOOK A CONSULTATION

'I went to LAB for advice and brought all the accessories and samples that I liked. We looked for paint colours together. Together, that resulted in a super nice mood board, which Justin and I have not looked back on. In fact, I have that mood board on my phone. With everything we buy, that remains the guideline.'
