5 ORIGINAL PAINT TIPS FROM ELISE BOERS AND WOUTER PEELEN

When it comes to colour, Elise Boers trusts her fiancé Wouter Peelen blindly. He developed an extra sense of colour somewhere along the way and knows exactly what a house needs to look good.

1. THE PLACE YOU LIKE TO BE MOST

'We love the colours of sunrise and sunset', says Elise. 'The beige Masala Chai no. 31 on the walls in the living room and bedroom feel like that moment.' Wouter also looks for his inspiration for colour in the places he likes to go. 'The depth of the colours from Morocco is almost impossible to find in any other country. It is the combination of sunlight with the desert and the colours in tiles and rugs. You see a lot of turquoise, green and blue. They are special colours.'

2. TAKE ALL YOUR BELIEFS AND BELONGINGS WITH YOU

Elise and Wouter have a clear strategy for choosing colour: 'Take everything you like or want in your home with you when you choose colours. We dragged wallpaper, the floor and even a stair runner with us. By putting everything next to each other, you can ultimately see whether the palette is right.'

3. BE PATIENT

Wouter: 'Sometimes something doesn't turn out the way I had in mind, that was the case with our hallway. It was too pink and tame, too tone-on-tone. It wasn't right. I like tough and bold. Every time I walked through the hallway, something was missing. I knew we were almost there and then I suddenly see it in front of me. The stairs, door and cupboard had to be a different colour, and the burgundy Lipstick Lover no. 908 gave it exactly the right body.' Elise is much more rigorous: 'I immediately think that we have to repaint everything, but luckily I trust Wouter completely in this. He keeps looking until it's right.'

4. THE SAME COLOR OVER AND OVER

'Don't choose a different colour in every room, that can become a hodgepodge', Wouter explains. 'We used the light Softened Green no. 271 in the boys' room upstairs, from the window frames in the living room. Try to let colours come back, that way the house remains connected everywhere. Even if you don't notice it immediately when you walk around.'

5. TON-SUR-TON-SUR-TON-SUR-TON

'Combine a lot of the same thing, and you create a whole. You might think it's too busy, but by using many different shades of green or blue, you actually create depth and layers. And don't be afraid, but always go for a bit more than you dare. More blue, more pink. More is more .'
